---Requirements---
Game require 2.25 mg of Hard Disk space and MCGA graphics capability.
Mouse recommended. 286/386/486 with system speed of 16MHz or greater
recommended. Sound Blaster board is supported (See the installation
section for special notes on insuring proper Sound Blaster Board setup).
---Introduction---
Welcome to the Land of ShadowKeep. You are a peasant, living in a small
town in the once great kingdom of Camelot. One night, the wizard Merlin
comes to you in a dream and reveals to you your heritage, that you are
the great- grandchild of the one true king himself, Arthur. Merlin has
been seized and captured by the Shadow King, a cruel and evil magician
who has captured Merlin and has placed the shades of the three greatest
knights of the Round- table, Sir Galahad, Sir Guy, and Sir Lancelot,
under a spell that keeps their remains from their final rest.
In the first game of ShadowKeep, Merlin tasks you with freeing the
spirits of the three knights, and with retreiving the sword Excalibur
from the Shadow King himself.
In this demo, your tasks are more limited. You must travel through the
Misty Woods, find the entrance to the tomb of Sir Guy, and fight your
way through to the catacomb of Sir Guy, defeat his shadow, and retrieve
the Emerald which holds him in his tomb.
---Installation---
the ShadowKeep demo is supplied as a single self-extracting file (using
LHA compression, from Yoshi). To extract, copy the file SHADOW_D to a
directory on the hard disk and run the file.
Once the program is extracted, run the program by typing SHADOWD and hit
the ENTER key.
---Running the program---
When you run ShadowKeep, the program will first present you with the
opening credits, and then will check to see if you have a SoundBlaster
card. If the program cannot find the BLASTER environment variable (that
should be created in your AutoExec when you install the SoundBlaster
software), the program will ask you how to proceed:
1) No SoundBlaster card
2) Try to autodetect (not recommended for SoundBlaster PRO)
3) Allow you to insert the values manually.
If you have no SoundBlaster card, hit 1.
_________________________________________________________________________2
ShadowKeep Demonstration__________________________________________________
If you wish the program to try to auto-detect your card, select 2. This
procedure is not recommended for SoundBlaster PRO cards because these
cards can have more than 1 DMA channel setting. The program attempts to
auto-detect your card by assuming DMA channel 1. This option also might
give you problems if you have several other cards installed, because the
program tries to write to certain interrupts that might already be
assigned by you to other cards in your system. If the program freezes
up, you will have to insert the settings manually.
If you wish to try to insert the values manually, select 3. For most
cards, the settings should be DMA Channel 1, Interrupt of 7, and IO of
220

ShadowKeep Demonstration__________________________________________________
S to try to guess a spell.
--spells are made up of three symbols. When you open the scroll, the
three symbols appear. Use the 1,2,3 keys to change symbol 1,2,3. When
you think you have come up with a spell combination, hit the Y key (yes)
to try the spell. If it is a spell, it will be added to your spell
knowledge. If it is not, then the program will tell you the spell had no
effect. Use the ESC to end the spell-guessing mode.--
U- the U key brings up the user menu.
The user menu is presented as a box. The character's face is at the
top/middle of the box. Underneath the character are three symbols. The
first symbol, a vest, is used to display the current values for a
character. (use the V key.) The third symbol, an open scroll, is used
to display the current spells known to a character (use the S key).
Since all of the spells have symbols in common (i.e. Attack spells all
start with the same symbol) this is a good screen to start on when you
are trying to guess a spell.
The middle screen, the inventory bag (use the I key) is used to
manipulate what is in the person's inventory, and to examine objects
that the player has. To work on this screen, perform your functions in
the following order:
1) Select the object- either click with the mouse, or use the:
l-for left hand
r-for right hand
b-for body
1-0 for first 10 objects and Q,W,E,R,T for last 5 objects.
2) Once you have selected the object:
select a new location for the object
select F-to use the object as food
select X-to examine the object,
select D- to drop the object.
When you are done with the screen, hit ESC to leave the screen.
In general, you can use the Y/N keys for yes/no responses, and the ESC
key to make OK responses.
Note that, in a battle, action is real-time. Those who hesitate will be
killed! Also note that some monsters have the capability of poisoning
you. If you are poisoned, you will have to find a CURE Poison vial.
